Fourways from Closer Quarters
The spirit of Jozi hardly finds a better expression than this suburb located in the far north of plush Sandton, Johannesburg. Fourways has something for everyone and is ideal for all those who love the unusual combination of the pulse of city life and the peace of the countryside. Geographically, it stretches to the point where the metropolitan city can be traced before it fades away into the rolling greens of hills and farms leading to the capital Pretoria situated about 55 km to the northeast. To the northwest, about half an hour from Fourways, lies the Hartebeespoort Dam and the Magaliesburg Mountains. Both the east and the south are bordered by Bryanston and to the west lays Randburg.
Fourways is easily accessible from a number of locations. It can primarily be reached by taking the route off N1 at the William Nicol Road. The other route lies along Witkoppen or the R511.
Former days of Fourways
The name Fourways was bestowed upon the place at a much later stage in history. But before that happened, there stood a 605 acre residence and game farm owned by the Eriksen family. The Eriksens originally hailed from Norway and Scotland. Hence named their residence that they built in the early 1920s the Norscot Manor. Norscot being a direct reference to the two nations.
Despite a few dissimilarities in dimension and shape, the architectural style of this manor can be compared to the Cape Dutch style that was very prominent in the early days of the Cape colony and can be traced back to mediaeval Holland, Germany, France, and Indonesia.
The property was eventually sold off and the manor house was given to the City Council of Johannesburg in the 1970s. The suburb that developed around it was thus named Norscot. The house where the Eriksens lived in before building the Norscot Manor still stands on the Flamingo Avenue. Silently reminding of the days that are no more.
Fourways derives its name from the four way stop at the meeting point of William Nicol Drive and Witkoppen Road. But that was the past. Today, William Nicol is a three lane wide road and cuts under Witkoppen. The only justification of the name Fourways can be found today in the two four way roundabouts on Kingfisher Drive. It is the primary thoroughfare of the Greater Fourways suburb, which intersects Robin Drive and Alexander Avenue.
